In 2024, I met my birth father. We're still getting to know one another, still building a relationship one conversation at a time.
After a trip to the Caribbean with Rick, I sent him photos and joked that I didn't want to come home. I wanted to be an island girl—and just lay in the sun on a rock like a lizard.
That’s when he started calling me "Island Girl."
Maybe it was just a nickname. Maybe it was his way of recognizing something in me that had always been there—a love for the ocean, and the feeling of freedom that comes from being near the water. Or maybe it's simply his way of reminding me that even after all these years apart, he sees something familiar in me.
